Cheeseburgers and Fun 2017

2016-0418_cheeseburgerlogo-largeWill be held on August 12, 2017 (Saturday)-Cheeseburgers and Fun, the largest one day event in Vermilion County has attracted thousands of people from all over the region.  It includes top notch performers, a huge antique car and hot rod show, antique tractor show while the Kennekuk Road Runners’ “Howl at the Moon” 8-hour run/walk will take place.  Though there is no cover charge, donations are gladly accepted for the Kennekuk Environmental Education Center and the Foundation. The Kennekuk County Park’s Bunker Hill historic area offers acres of classic vehicles, a huge tent for enjoying the Cheeseburger cook out hosted by the VCCFoundation.

2017 sponsorships are available for your business!  It’s a great way to bring your name before thousands of people having a great time!  Your sponsorship ensures the event will off set the cost of the event with any profit going for the many projects of the VCCFoundation.  As a sponsor, your name will be prominently displayed on stage as well as the event area, and announced throughout the days activities, listed in the VCCFoundation’s newsletter “The Conservationist” (readership of 2500+) and on this website before the event and after as a “thank you.”

Conservation Olympics

were held 2017 – May 12 (Friday)-The Conservation Olympics was held on Friday, May 12th and included a number of area 6th graders at Forest Glen.

 Bunker Hill Historic Area Buildings
Cabin and Nature Center Open for Visitors

Atwood house resizedWill be open 2017-May 28-Sept 4 (Sundays)-The Historic Buildings at the Bunker Hill Historic Area located in the Kennekuk County Park and the Cabin and Nature Center at Forest Glen Preserve will open Sundays from May 28th through Labor Day Weekend from 1 to 4pm

Illini Bass Club/D.A.R.E Kid’s Fishing Derby

will be held 2017 – June 3 (Saturday)-Fishing Derby sponsored by the Illini Bass Club and D.A.R.E at the Horseshoe Pond, Kennekuk County Park.  For details call Lara at 442-1691.

French and Indian War Reenactment

will be held 2017 – July 15 – 16 (Saturday-Sunday) The Vermilion County Conservation District will hold a French and Indian War Reenactment at Forest Glen Preserve on Saturday (10am-5pm) and Sunday (10am-4pm). The event includes costumed re-enactors portraying life on the frontier during the period from 1740 to 1763. A full battle with muskets and cannons occures at 2pm each day.  The days also included the fife and drum corps, cannon demo, historic fashion show and tomahawk throw.

The event was free to the public and takes place at the Pioneer Homestead in Forest Glen Preserve.

Saturday Hayrides at Forest Glen

Will be held 2017 – June 3, July 1, Aug 5,  (Saturdays)-Hayrides are offered on Saturday evenings at 7pm at Forest Glen and  2017 – Sept 2, Oct. 7 (Saturdays) Hayrides are offered at 6pm.  Meet at the staff office parking lot; Cost $1 per person.

Summer Camp Programs
from the Vermilion County Conservation District will be held in 2017

34The Vermilion County Conservation District’s Summer programs offer outdoor fun for kids ages 3 and older. With almost 4,500 acres between Kennekuk County Park and the Forest Glen Preserve, children gain appreciation and knowledge of wildlife and the great outdoors.  Our camp programs give children the opportunity to explore their natural world through hands-on discoveries, hiking excursions and art experiences.

Revolutionary War Reenactment and

Pioneer Craft Day

Will be held 2017 – September 23-24 (Saturday-Sunday)-The Revolutionary War Reenactment takes place along with the Pioneer Craft Day.  Visitors discover and learn what our ancestors dealt with in the late 1700s.  It takes place at the Homestead Cabin Area at Forest Glen Preserve, Free.

Haunted Happenings

vccdf 19Will be held 2017 – October 21 (Saturday)-The Vermilion Conservation District offers a scary trip at the Bunker Hill Historic Area at Kennekuk County Park.  This is one of the most sought after tickets in the area as admission is just $10 per person in advance. There are a limited number of tickets available at the Visitor’s Center at Kennekuk.  Remember that tickets are always required!

Thanksgiving at the Cabin

Will be held 2017 – November 5  (Sunday)-People will enjoy a pioneer Thanksgiving meal  at the Pioneer Cabin located at Forest Glen Preserve.  Free

3rd Annual Sportsman Banquet

Was held  March 4, 2017

The Vermilion County Conservation Foundation and Sportsman’s Banquet Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support! With your past support, we have been able to finish Phase I of the Environmental Education Center at Kennekuk County Park.  This facility has already been enjoyed by many Vermilion County students and hosted various other activities. Also, with your help we have been able to assist with the purchase of a John Deere tractor.   This tractor has been put to use at all of the VCCD properties for habitat management.

Our 3rd Annual Sportsman’s Banquet was held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Riggle Banquet Center on Lyons Road in Westville, IL.  As in the past, all proceeds stay local to support the VCCF’s goals. Thank you for partnering with the VCCF and their eff orts to educate our children, protect our natural resources and continue to improve Vermilion County.

ANNUAL MAPLE SYRUP OPEN HOUSE

The Annual Maple Syrup Open House, hosted by the Vermilion County Conservation District, took place in the Pioneer Homestead Area on Sunday, March 19th, at Forest Glen Preserve, Westville, IL.  The Sugar Bush, the building in which maple syrup is made, as well as the Pioneer Cabin, was open from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. CST.  Interpreters were on hand to demonstrate the maple syrup making process.

A record number of visitors enjoyed a delicious pancake and sausage dinner served with Forest Glen’s famous maple syrup in the Gannett Outdoor Education Center.   Adults $5.00, children under 12, $2.50.  Dinner was served from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. CST. We sold out of syrup before noon.

Holiday Open House

Was held 2016-December 9 (Friday)-People enjoyed the Holiday decorated Bunker Hill historic area on Friday evening from 2 to 8pm.  The Neff Grocery, the print shop, school house, chapel, the Atwood house were all decked out in the decorations of the era.  Many brought their cameras and enjoyed the tasty snacks at the Neff Grocery!  Free
